Crash Course Explains it

Crash Course made a great video on the subject, and it might be a little more entertaining than reading our page.

A Short History

Relatively.

Both states date their claims back thousands of years because of religious connections. The area is very holy for both Jewish people and Muslim people. Both religions had major populations in the area at some time. Until world war two, the area was a colony of Great Britain, but the people were mostly Muslim Palestinians. After the atrocities of world war two, the allies and the United Nations decided that the Jewish population of the world needed a homeland and a country of their own. Britain gave them a lot of the land that is in current-day Israel. Unfortunately for the plan, there were already Palestinians living in a lot of the land that Israel was given. This, of course, created a conflict. As Jewish settlers moved into the region, the Palestinians were forced to leave their homes and move to the remaining land. Understandably, the Palestinians were quite upset by the situation. The United Nations tried to resolve the conflict by giving land to both sides, but this plan was not respected, and the Palestinians lost even more land. Since then, there has been fighting, arguing, and conflict in the area. Even today the United Nations is still looking for a viable solution to the issue.
